Start Building Your Brand Voice

Building a brand voice gives you and your business a means for communicating with your clients, customers, target audience, and the world. Your brand voice can be heard on your website, your advertisements, your social media, and wherever else you choose to share what you do. By building a brand voice, you give your business a language and a personality that can help you connect more intimately with those you want to reach.

While there are lots of ways to build a brand voice, here are three questions to answer that will help you to start building your brand voice.

1. What works? What does not work?

In my opinion, it is always good practice to take inventory of what works and what does not work. Pick out two or three brands with a voice you love and pick out two or three brands with a voice you can't stand. Think about what makes these brand voices stand out. Is it the words they use or the way they get their message across? What does their brand voice make you feel like and why? Make note of what works and doesn't work about the brand voices you love and the ones you can't stand.

2. What does your brand value?

You may draw a list of what your brand values by looking at your company's core values or mission statement. Or you may have a brand with values all its own. Either way, be clear about what your brand values so that you can begin to understand what kind of content your brand can create to express those values.

3. If your brand was a person, how would you describe their personality?

Choose three to five words to describe your brand's personality. Let these descriptors help you to define the tone, language, and voice of your brand. Create a brand voice chart that describes in more depth why you chose the words you chose and what language to use or not use in order to stay in line with those descriptors.
